“I was stopped in my tracks on seeing
Andrew’s “Low water, the Torridge at
Bideford” in person at the Royal Society
of Marine Artists’ annual exhibition.
Whatever his subject, Andrew creates
drama without spectacle, using the
impact of scale, a considered palette, and
a patiently sustained painting method.
Informed by his dedicated practice of
painting (and running!) in the field,
Andrew’s work gives room for the fabric
of the view to sing. His birds invite you to
know them and their landscape. By
relishing the surface of water, he seems
to implicitly describe weather and
atmosphere.
As a painter I recognise
and appreciate Andrew’s
skilful control of tonal
value, hue, and saturation.
In this exhibition he
offers the viewer a wide
variety of compositions,
all serving to convey the
initial moment that
caught his attention.
An enduring feast for the
eye and the soul”.
